In 2008, Rush Limbaugh famously said that he hoped President Obama would fail.
The Huffington Post reported that in 2010, then-Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”
Both Limbaugh and McConnell were harshly criticized for their statements. Liberals and the media blasted both as hateful and obstructionist. They made it about hate and race rather than even consider that Limbaugh and McConnell might truly have ideological differences with Obama and that those differences could make them want to see Obama fail and leave office after one term.
(US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Shumer, D-NY)
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) is now in spin mode after learning all of the wrong lessons from the past. Asked if he has a similar agenda to the one McConnell asserted in 2008, Schumer responded, “I wouldn’t call that my goal.”
That leaves many wondering what kind of minority leader Shumer will actually be.
Already distrusted on the left, Shumer has pledged to work with Trump on issues like the infrastructure package. For the ideologues that would rather go down fighting than work with any Republican, this is enough to cause day drinking (well, they’re Democrat activists so it’s not like they have jobs anyway).
Shumer realizes that he is facing a two front war – keeping the rabid left happy while also giving his fellow Democrats an agenda to run on in the upcoming midterms. As a practical matter that means talking out both sides of his mouth, working with the GOP where he can, even if it strengthens Trump, while obstructing them when the left-wing mob shows up on his doorstep with pitchforks and torches.
By refusing to promise to work towards Trump’s defeat, he may have just handed himself to the mob.
Anyway you slice it, it is going to be entertaining!
