Stemming from President Donald Trump’s executive order that temporarily restricts immigration from seven countries with a majority Muslim population including Iraq, Syria, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen, there has been backlash from those who opposed Trump as well has some of his supporters.
It all came to a boil when two men shot up a mosque in Quebec City, Quebec Sunday evening, leaving six dead and 19 wounded. Quebec provincial police Sgt. Christine Coulombe said the men who died at the Centre Culturel Islamique de Québec (Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec) ranged from ages 35 to 70.
Radio-Canada later learned the two men arrested in connection with the shooting are Alexandre Bissonnette and Mohamed Khadir. Khadir is of Moroccan descent. The Daily Mail notes how each of them were arrested.
Khadir was arrested at the scene but Bissonnette fled in his Mitsubishi and arrested 15 miles away, around 20 minutes later, after calling 911 to turn himself in. Police found a handgun and an AK-47 in the car.
An anonymous witness gives his recount of the attack to Radio-Canada.
“It seemed to me that they had a Québécois accent. They started to fire, and as they shot, they yelled, ‘Allahu akbar!’ The bullets hit people that were praying. People who were praying lost their lives. A bullet passed right over my head.
“There were even kids. There was even a three-year-old who was with his father,” the witness said.
The shooting began around 8 pm ET and the scene was secure around 10:40 pm ET. Once the severity of the attack was known, more than 2000 officers were deployed by Quebec City Police.
Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard called the attack an act of terrorism.
“It’s a murderous act directed at a specific community,” Couillard said at a press conference. “I think the majority of citizens, not just in Quebec but elsewhere, would describe it that way.”
“We are with you. You are at home. And you are welcome at home,” he added, directing his message at the Muslim community.
This is not the first time this mosque has been targeted. Last June, during Ramadan, a pig’s head was left on its doorstep.
