Ever since WikiLeaks first started leaking emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and those of John Podesta, campaign chairman for Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Clinton, her staff, and high ranking members of the DNC have all been loudly asserting that the Russian government was behind the email hack and that it was done to benefit Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.
The New York Times reported on Monday that the FBI has been investigating the Russian role in this year’s presidential campaign.
Agents scrutinized advisers close to Donald J. Trump, looked for financial connections with Russian financial figures, searched for those involved in hacking the computers of Democrats, and even chased a lead – which they ultimately came to doubt – about a possible secret channel of email communication from the Trump Organization to a Russian bank.
Despite a thorough investigation, no evidence has been found linking Trump to the Russian government.
The Clinton campaign has long touted a relationship between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin despite a lack of evidence. They say the hack itself is evidence that the Russian government is acting to support Trump. The Times notes that Trump has called Putin a “great leader” and that they do share some similar policies. But they fail to point out the areas in which Trump and Putin differ.
In the wake of the reopening of the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s email practices, Democrats are clamoring for more information about this FBI investigation into Trump. Democrats are crying foul claiming that FBI Director James Comey is acting in a partisan manner as he informed Congress about the investigation in to Clinton but refuses to comment on the existence of any investigation of Trump or his business.
FBI officials have indicated that “no evidence has emerged that would link him or anyone else in his business or political circle directly to Russian’s election operations.”
While those in the intelligence community have become fairly convinced that the Russian government was in some way behind the recent hacks, “investigators have become increasingly confident, based on the evidence they have uncovered, that Russia’s direct goal is not to support the election of Mr. Trump, as many Democrats have asserted, but rather to disrupt the integrity of the political system and undermine American’s standing in the world more broadly.”
The truth is that Clinton herself has done as much, if not more, to undermine the integrity of our system by her reckless safeguarding of America’s secrets. It is evident that those in the Clinton campaign are merely trying to shift attention away from themselves and their own potentially illegal acts.
