Almost one-million illegal aliens obtained driver’s licenses in California thanks to a controversial state law.
The law went into effect almost two years ago and illegal aliens have flooded to DMV offices each month. State lawmakers literally gave the keys to legitimacy for people who willingly violated United States law.
Illegal aliens who took advantage of the state law fear President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to crack down on the lawbreakers. They’re worried federal officials will use the driver’s license data to track them down for deportation.
Much of their fear is because federal immigration authorities might access their DMV information, despite assurances from state officials that it won’t happen, according to The Mercury News.
“We have definitely been hearing about a lot of fear from our community, especially with a new administration coming on board and the anti-immigrant rhetoric that’s been out there,” said Maricela Gutierrez, executive director of the immigration advocacy organization, SIREN.. “Everything is theoretical as we speak, but we are definitely taking precautions.”
The Mercury News reported there are an estimated 3 million illegal aliens in California. In the two years after the implementation of AB 60 on Jan. 1, 2015, an estimated 806,000 undocumented residents have received driver’s licenses based on Department of Motor Vehicles statistics from December. About 14,000 of the licenses were issued in November alone, the DMV reported.
California lawmakers have vowed to protect the rights of all immigrants, no matter their legal status.
That includes preserving a new law that could send millions of illegal immigrants to the voting booth in upcoming elections.
Critics also point to another state “motor-voter” law, AB 1461, that starting in 2017 will automatically register most licensed California drivers to vote. Critics argue it could lead to election fraud if non-citizens barred from voting in federal elections become registered.
State officials said there are safeguards in the system to prevent undocumented licensees from being registered to vote.
California’s “motor voter” laws are nothing more than a cover to let illegal aliens vote.
The state set itself up as a pipeline for illegal aliens to avoid federal law. Millions are now “legitimized” and millions more will follow.
Federal lawmakers need to ensure access to this DMV database of illegal aliens and send the lawbreakers packing.
